Do the words Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate or rPET ring a bell? If not, then don’t worry: this plastic resin (which is a form of polyester) is not really well-known in many circles. However, there is no doubt that you’ve probably made use of this material at one time or another: this is because it is recycled from used PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) plastic which sees use in a variety of products and applications. PET plastic can be 100% fully recycled into rPET plastic; the majority of which comes from “virgin” PET water bottles and beverage packaging.
There are definite advantages to using rPET plastic. For one, it takes less energy to create: The Environmental Protection Agency tells us that we can save 12,000 BTUs by simply recycling one pound of PET plastic. Furthermore, recycling 4,800 16 oz. PET bottles can conserve one cubic yard of landfill; while one ton of recycled PET equals 7.4 cubic yards of conserved landfill space. Just like its progenitor, rPET plastic is highly-durable, transparent, lightweight, thermo-stable, shatter-resistant, eco-friendly, and cost-effective. Best of all, rPET plastic can be recycled over and over again.
But there is more to rPET plastic than meets the eye. It can be recycled into other things; some of which may surprise you. It is used as a fabric for T-Shirts and as Polyester Carpet Fibers. You can also find rPET plastic in Athletic Shoes and Long Underwear; as well as in Winter Coats, Sleeping Bags, and Sweaters as Fiber Filling. It can be recycled into plastic used for Upholstery and Luggage, and it makes an appearance in items such as Automotive Parts, Plastic Sheets and Films, and in Industrial Strapping.
But what is the most popular use for recycled rPET bottles? Of course, they are reborn as new Plastic Water Bottles!
